Law/Patents - Law (general) / divorce decree
Spanish term or phrase: antecedentes [divorcio]

Motivación (Grounds for Ruling)

background information

Explanation:
Background information provides further evidence and the history of a case, possibly along with the reasons for a request.

In the example provided in the question:
The couple separated five years previously, after being married without children. They submitted a letter to the Venezuelan fiscal authority as a request for a legal divorce.

prior matters; matters predating the decree

Explanation:
Has the advantage and 'merit' of being original and in the plural.

'Lead-up' doesn't look like a natural choice in a divorce context, but (I have heard and seen) used informally in legal and judicial shop talk.

My only problem with 'background' is overlap with the novel, Anglocentric idea of 'background evidence' in criminal law and that, as some Criminal Law Barristers can't seem to grasp, does not overlap with similar fact evidence.
