@phil My take is that "cateo" is a noun form related to "catar",i.e. to test/try/sample/taste.
The DRAE definition (Acción y efecto de catear (‖ buscar una veta minera) seems to correspond to "prospect/ing":
Prospect
verb [ I ] -> to search for gold, oil, or other valuable substances on or under the surface of the earth.
Nevertheless, I stand by my suggestion, it in other words, that it refers to soil testing/sampling and the relevant sites/ permits.
I suppose if we wanted to use 'prospect' we could say something like 'prospecting /prospection sites/permits."

neutral  philgoddard: I thought this at first, but now I'm not sure. It says 'cateos concedidos', and you can't really grant a test or sample. Also, 'suelo' isn't mentioned anywhere. Could it be an exploration permit?

Sorry, the term is prospecting, not prospection!

Prospecting is the first stage of the geological analysis (followed by exploration) of a territory. It is the search for minerals, fossils, precious metals, or mineral specimens. It is also known as fossicking.
