Russian term or phrase: своевольные

neutral  Boris Shapiro: They are indeed taking about lynch mobs, but neither term is historically appropriate, ofc.

-> Thank you, Boris. These are unruly vigilantes - people who take law into their own hands.

agree  Susan Welsh: works for me

Unruly

Explanation:
Вполне соответствует и смыслу, и стилистике несовременного текста. Но я бы непременно дополнил его существенным (упаси Вас Боже писать просто прилагательное, или, тем паче, '... ones'): например, unruly townspeople.

disagree  Susan Welsh: It's worse than unruly. Unruly is like kids beating each other up at recess.

-> I beg to disagree! While, to a modern eye, this may appear to be the most widely used collocation, consider Shakespeare's usage. Or Bunyan's. Or Wordsworth's. Haven't you noticed that we're dealing with 12th century source material?

disagree  Pervane Kerimova: It is an adjective, not a noun Re: что вы ищете ы моем профиле? вам нечего делать?

My suggestion: And they sent missives to all the towns, ordering [the Jews] to be banished at once, but some people took matters into their own hands, attacking and robbing [the Jews] in town and on the road.

-> Thank you for your incompetent opinion. Once again, learn Russian first, then come to these forums.

agree  Boris Shapiro: Оставляя в стороне спор о стилистике, семантически - совершенно нормальный вариант.
8 hrs
-> Спасибо! О стилистике мы можем спорить и дальше :)
