Norwegian term or phrase: det norske
This is an interesting one, I think. I'm translating an article within anthropology about Sami communities and identity. The article speaks both about "'det norske' and 'det samiske' and I need an equally elegant and concise way to articulate this in English. Because the original is so broad, I'm struggling to find anything that doesn't feel reductive, and a direct translation of the original feels too staccato to me, even if it would be understood.

From the text:
Gullestad skriver at familien ble identifisert med det norske, og at følelsen av underlegenhet hang fast i at deres kulturelle assimilasjon ikke ble akseptert av andre nordmenn.

Hvordan påvirker hennes opptatthet av hverdagsliv og livshistorier den måten hun analyserer Einars besvær med å finne et velfungerende språk om hva det samiske betyr for han?

Samtidig er fortellingene, eller sporene av det samiske og det kvenske, så utvisket og utydelige at han har vanskeligheter med å finne de begrepene og fortellermessige grepene som kan ivareta den kompleksitet, taushet og de mange motsetningene som er i det stedet som han er vokst opp i.
