German term or phrase: kriegsmäßig
From a 1941 letter, written in Vienna:

"Vaters Geburtstag ist kriegsmäßig ausgefallen. Er bekam eine Flasche Wein, eine Flasche Schnaps und ein Packerl Rauchtabak. Das eigentliche Geschenk, ein Nachthemd, das Adi anfertigen ließ, ist noch nicht hier, da man jetzt nichts schicken kann, soll aber nächste Woche per Boten kommen. Das fleischlose Geburtstagsmenü bestand aus eine falsche Rindssuppe..." etc. etc.

Not sure of the meaning of "kriegsmäßig" in this context.

Notes to answerer
Asker: This makes sense. So maybe the sentence is something like: "Father's birthday turned out as only a birthday in wartime could." (Followed by a number of problems and shortcomings surrounding the event.)

because of the war / on account of the war

Explanation:
Father's birthday was not celebrated / We didn't celebrate Father's birthday because of the war / on account of the war. He got a bottle of wine, a bottle of schnapps and a pack of smoking tobacco. The actual gift, a nightgown that Adi had made, isn't here yet, since we can't send anything right now, but it's supposed to come by courier next week. The meatless birthday menu consisted of an imitation beef broth / a fake beef broth.

kriegsmäßig ausfallen
be cancel(l)ed by war / the War

Explanation:
Father's birthday had been ..

A common enough way of putting it - without making a meal of it and in the UK at least, as in 'Christmas had been cancelled by or over the Pandemic, shortage of money, someone's death etc.'.

No refs. or example sentences possible as wiped out 'by or owing to tech problems.'

disagree  Andrew Bramhall: 'By' is the wrong preposition here, sorry. The German idea here is " wegen des Krieges", i.e, on account of the war; see Andres Larsen's answer.
1 hr

disagree  AllegroTrans: I agree with AB, and it wasn't cancelled - just not fully celebrated
9 hrs

disagree  Steffen Walter: It wasn't cancelled - see the context (gifts etc.). If that were actually the case, the author would have put "kriegsbedingt ausgefallen".

on a war footing

Explanation:
"Father's birthday turned out on a war footing (this year). He got a bottle of wine, a bottle of schnapps and a packet of hand-rolling tobacco. The actual present, a nightgown that Adi had made, is not here yet, as nothing can be sent now, but it should come by messenger next week. become moderate

Explanation:
The phase is a little idiomatic: krieg=guerra; mäßig=with moderation; mäßig ausfallen = to turn out moderately [or to be moderate]. Then, to make sense we will say 'turned moderate', perhaps better 'become moderate'; it makes sense 'was moderated' too.

disagree  Björn Vrooman: You yourself have translated "kriegsmäßig" as "because of the war" so I have no idea why you'd suggest "become moderate" for "ausgefallen," which wasn't asked for.//You cannot split up a German compound like this. Never. Ever.

-> If you’ll read my commentaries carefully you’ll see I’m right. (see links too) Chiefly because is a little idiomatic. Krieg – war mäßig=with moderation; mäßig ausfallen = to turn out moderately [or to be moderate]. Then, to make sense we will say 'turned

disagree  writeaway: This is dead wrong. As Björn says, you can't split kriegsmäßig into Krieg and mäßig. That is nonsensical.

-> Anna Wright I'd suggest something like: '[Being at] war put a damper on [celebrating] father's birthday...' or 'put paid to...' for greater emphasis

Vaters Geburtstag ist kriegsmäßig ausgefallen.
The war put paid to father's usual birthday celebrations.

Explanation:
This rephrasing conveys the message that father's birthday could not go ahead in the usual manner, owing to the war, in a natural idiom. It adds 'usual ... celebrations' for explicitation.

Simpler formulations would be:
- War put paid to celebrating father's birthday.
- War ruled out celebrating father's birthday.
