Tech/Engineering - Mining & Minerals / Gems / mine design
English term or phrase: riffle
The waste dumps will be lined with impervious material, either clay from the operation or heavy-duty plastic. The surface above this zone will be designed as a higher area than the remainder of the dump to limit rainwater infiltration. An armoured spillway will be formed from the top and down the side of the dump. Water will be encouraged to seep into the main dump of non-acid forming (NAF) material to limit erosion potential. The outer limit of the dump will be formed of saprolite material to encourage voluntary colonisation by endemic flora. Fresh rock will be placed internally to the weathered waste material. The final angle of the slopes will be below the slump angle of the material. Where necessary, areas can be armoured and riffles placed to decrease the velocity of water egress.

séquence mouille-rapide / mouille-radier

Explanation:
For me, they are talking about the 'natural' (modified) environment here, not systems for recovering mineral particles in some sort of sluice. A 'mechanical' riffle used for this purpose uses the principle of natural riverbed riffles.

Riffles are the shallower, faster moving sections of a stream. Look for areas with a fast current where rocks break the water surface. That's a riffle. Riffles are important to fish habitat. As water rushes over the rocks it adds oxygen to the water.

What is the difference between pools and riffles?
Pools are deep with slow water. Riffles are shallow with fast, turbulent water running over rocks. Runs are deep with fast water and little or no turbulence..

While various sources present different flow régimes as separate entities, e.g. …
[Wikipedia]

…I would suggest that just as you can't have 'good' without 'bad', you can't have riffles without pools (or some other flow régime) (see 'sections' above). The Cartesian French might insist on the notion of séquence as above and assemblage régulier des faciès d’écoulement as below..

https://fr.ancey.ch/cours/postgrade/cours-postgrade.pdf

Whether séquences mouilles-rapides as above corresponds precisely to 'riffle' I cannot say. Séquences mouilles-radiers is also tempting. I'm not sure rapides works in isolation, and radier in isolation could be taken to be several different (manmade) things entirely in terms of river hydraulics.

agree  Daryo: yes, but in this ST it's only about "radiers", not the whole combination "mouille + seuils (ou radiers)"
