Podaci na svom putu od izvorišta (tipično N relacijski baza podataka) do odredišta (skladište podataka) prolaze niz transformacijskih i integracijskih faza. Iz praktičnih razloga, tu se koristi jedna baza podataka, pripremno područje, u kojem se prikupljaju podaci i obavljaju transformacije. Ta baza podataka se naziva (Data) Staging Area.
