positioned with its smallest face

"Testa" is a term more commonly applied to bricks or blocks of stone; it denotes the smallest face, the least face, of the brick or stone block. This can be clearly seen at this site:
https://www.glosarioarquitectonico.com/glossary/cabezal/
An alternative set of names for the faces of a brick or block would be "top," "side" & "end"; for our purposes here, the "testa" would be the end of the sterilizer assembly.
So here, "In placing the sterilizer, it should be positioned with its (small) end against the side wall" - or something like that.

I think 'back to back' applies here :-)
Note from asker:
The accepted answer there was "butt joint" so why do you say "back to back?"
