When reading a post by a Proz.com member, I sometimes want to reply directly to that person with a personal message (if, for example, I want to offer help etc). At the moment, I have to visit their profile and then copy/paste the thread URL. Would it be possible to have a link next to a person's post to send a personal message to that person, in a way which quotes the message too?

Not everyone allows personal email from proz Jun 23, 2005

If I'm not mistaken, some people choose not to allow personal email to come to them through their proz profiles. (Another option is for only registered users to be able to send messages). My point is that a universal auto-respond button would be somewhat misleading, wouldn't it, since it wouldn't work for everyone?

Is that something to encourage? Jun 23, 2005

This would not be very hard to do, but I am not sure this is something we should encourage. Thoughts from others?

It is possible right now Jun 23, 2005

It's true that you have to go to the profile, copy and paste, but it doesn't happen so often that a shorter way should be useful in my view.

I'm a member in a travelers' site and I stopped posting in forums because every time I did I received lots of private mails, many with particular requests because I'm based in Chile, bus timetables, prices, postcards for collectionners...

It's not that I don't want to help, but private mails require from you much more than public requests. If you're busy you don't answer and the asker will get an answer coming from somebody else. If you don't answer to private e-mail it's not the same thing.

This is just an experience but I was surprised when I noticed that it made me change my habits.
Most of the time the comments can be useful for the public discussion too.

You can do that now Jun 23, 2005

When you go someone's profile page, there's a link (in red) that says, "Send email to this person."

I agree with much of what you're saying. This option should be limited to registered users, and there should be an opt-out (or opt-in) tickbox on their profile setup pages too. The "reply-to-sender" links should therefore only be active if the responder is logged in and if the original poster opted in for such replies.

The case which prompted me to write this, was that of a Proz user who had some difficulty with a file, which I may have been able to assist him with. But instead of replying to his post in the public forum with a public message saying "send me the file and I'll see what I can do for you", I thought it would have been better to send him a personal message offering my help.

Another option (which may be made available to all or only to platinum members) is to have a tickbox at the bottom of the message editing screen saying "allow users to send me direct replies". When a user asks for help, therefore, he can tick the box before he presses the "post" or "post reply" button. There should then also be an option in the user's profile to have this box ticked by default.
