I might Dec 17, 2012

One of my main clients gave me a raise in November, and another one increases rates automatically every year. This widens the gap between these two and the rest, so obviously it's in my interest to either raise the others or focus more excusively on these two clients.

that I'll be able to.

The government has just announced yet another a downward projection for the Japanese economy. I'm sure that outsourcing companies here will simply use this as an excuse to turn the thumbscrews even further on downtrodden translators like yours truly.

Until the general economic situation gets better, I think I'm earning enough to be able to keep my rates as they are.

Many thanks - the main reason I link to inflation is because it is an "independent" justification of the rise. My costs have gone up, so my rates have to too.

Good everning, Samantha
(well, it is evening here on the other side of the globe)

There is talk here about a downward deflationary spiral, so I hope my customers do not use this link to deflation as a similar '"independent" justification' foil for forcing their translators -- i.e. me -- to accept lower rates.

The poll question is phrased in such a way as to suggest that translators charge the same rates to every client.
In practice, most of us have a range of rates applying to different clients, and actively engage in ensuring that with new clients we get the best rate possible. By "best rate" I mean the highest per word rate, not the lowest!

I shall be increasing my stated range, probably in mid-January. Concurrently, and without cutting my nose to spite my face, I will be actively accepting work paid at more than my previous "minimum", and will not accept assignments which fall below that level, for whatever reason.
How else can one pay for CAT tool upgrades?

It's a continuous process Dec 17, 2012

I ask all new clients for a slightly higher rate than my existing clients and then when I have enough clients at the higher rate I raise it for the older clients, and so on. I don't raise rates arbitrarily as it risks losing existing clients.
