... but actually that's a lie. I was once asked to attend a focus group meeting in Germany and went with my then three-month old daughter in tow.
I can't see why the job would really involve travelling much. Although interpreting is obviously a different kettle of fish.

I have never officially travelled abroad for work, but as I live in my target language country, I see trips to my home country as a chance to "brush up" on my native language

I rarely travel abroad for work, but it does occur.
I attended a meeting at a client's office in Belgium in January. I was also quite tempted to attend a workshop in the UK in February, but my schedule wouldn't allow it this time round.
From memory, I've travelled to the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Belgium and Spain for professional purposes over the past six years.

Does that include meeting a client or an author, attending a conference or a seminar, finding out more about a situation, a mentality or a language?
If not, my answer should be "never". If it does, I would say "several times a year" but probably never enough to my taste!
Or is this poll meant for interpreters only?

I meant the poll to include translators too and I meant it to include all work related travel too.
I noticed in last year and this year more clients and many more foreign clients wanted to actually meet me in person, rather than just correspond. As I have not changed the fields or the languages I work in, I wondered if it was a trend and if maybe others noticed this too.

I usually make a point of going to about 3 Powwows in Germany, my source language country. Apart from speaking the lingo, there are so many other nuances that you suck in, be it current affairs, politics, advertising, slang, what's new, what's cool... Things that you would not necessarily take in on the Net.
I also like the beer and the food.

Interchanges of information, discussions about workflow optimisation and bonding are IMO of particular importance with direct clients and the higher rate justifies the expense. A direct client's other suppliers call by - why shouldn't we?
Apart from that, my wife quite likes it when I don the corset to make that suave appearance. Heck - I even received an E-Valentine's Card from a direct client! ▲ Collapse

In Memoriam
Three weeks translating Russian to English at a firm in Paris in December 2008. All expenses paid, interesting work, nice people. Gave me the opportunity to visit a one-time school exchange partner with my daughter, after not having seen her for over 20 years. All in all, a very enjoyable experience. I'd like to think it might be repeated some time!

...back in the days before computers, to translate at conferences. Then I had a long stint as a precis-writer, but I gave that up in 2003, and now I stay at home.
