Nadejda Vega Cespedes wrote: ...exchange instant messages with your loved one while sitting in the same room. Interestingly, it is far better to do it this way. If my wife is busy with something on the computer and I speak to her, then I'm *interrupting* her thoughts and she finds that annoying. But if she's busy and I send her an IM, then she can mentally switch off the one task and switch on the IM task, answer my query, and go back to her task, without experiencing the interruption as an interruption. I find the same when people speak to me while I translate versus when people send me an IM while I translate -- the latter is not perceived as an interruption, probably because you're in complete control of the convesation (from your point of view).

Nicolas Coyer wrote: ...you've just heard the "new IM/e-mail" sound when your computer is not even switched on Funny, I also hear imaginary beeps of SMS messages from my mobile phone. Should we start worrying? Anyway, getting back on topic, here's a classic one. "You know you are working too hard on your computer when".... "instead of crying 'Help' you cry 'F1'"...

Decades ago I read on the paper about a traffic accident caused by a jet pilot. He had made a perfect landing with a 737 at the airport, picked up his car, and was driving home on the freeway. Suddenly, all traffic stopped, but he never attempted to apply the brakes. Instinctively, he pulled the steering wheel towards him, but it didn't move, so he smashed his car against the next one. Some people call me on the cell phone to ask when I'll be online with Skype. ▲ Collapse
