русский term

теплится

русский => английский Искусство/Литература Литература и поэзия
Сознания нет. Лишь теплится инстинкт самосохранения. А рядом особа женского пола с косой. Сдайся - и все закончится.

My own version:
"Only the instinct of self-preservation, though very faint, still remains."

Discussion

Alexander Demyanov May 20, 2007:
You may, of course, add "faint", "feeble", or "weak", but I think "linger" sort of implies that already: "2. to remain alive; continue or persist, although gradually dying, ceasing, disappearing, etc." - http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/linger.
Andrew Vdovin (asker) May 20, 2007:
Thank you very much for your help Alexander. Do you thing just ‘linger on’ would be enough for ‘теплится’ and there’s no need to add ‘faint’ or something?

Thanks, Jim!
agree Simon Hollingsworth : Very good. I thought of "to greenhouse". What do you think? Sorry, I was just messing about

Thanks, Simon. I didn't know "greenhouse" as a verb. Wouldn't be alluding to something like the global warming? Or to something "sheltered"?//Now you make me feel really stupid for the joke being lost on me.

Thanks, Olga!
agree The Misha : I offered a different variant but then on second though changed my mind. Yours captures the meaning of the entire passage better

Thanks, Misha! You mean, a variant of "lingers", or a different suggetion all together?

agree Andrew Sabak : ...or "flickers"?
5 час
Thanks, Andrew! I believe "to flicker" is to burn unsteadily, like a "candle flickering in the wind", and this doesn't seem to work for "теплиться".
agree Olga Cartlidge : I like "flickers" too, like in "a flickering hope".

Thanks, Olga! I don't like "flickers" too much because, e.g. "flickering hope" is hope that sort of oscillates between dissapearing and appearing again, and I don't think this is the meaning of "теплится" here.
agree Сергей Лузан : To be slow in leaving, especially out of reluctance
