На мой взгляд, эта фраза вполне передает смысл исходника. Уже "немолодое" выражение, означающее "дорого отдать жизнь", "сражаться до последнего" и т.д. (не говоря уже о названии сами-знаете-какого фильма).
По первой сслыке - значение 8. По второй - история происхождения сих великих слов.

Пример взят по второй ссылке - Командир поднимает боевой дух бойцов.

To my mind the phrase "die hard" fully conveyes the original meaning. It's quite an oldie (but goodie) and implies fighting "to the last ditch", bravely and fiercely (not to mention the famous movie).
