If that's a theatre that has been calling itself "academic" for over 100 years, I don't think we should change that now even if would be better to say it otherwise. It's not for us to translate - it's something that exists in the theatre name and has been used for many years.

Thank you, Jack!
disagree Thomas O'Gara : I suppose that we have to bow to existing usage, but I still feel that "academic" is an unfortunate translation of академический.

Thomas, as Rachel pointed out, it depends on what you mean.
agree Rachel Douglas : The Bolshoi is "academic" not by being attached to an academy, but by having an academy attached to it! It's like saying "the Bolshoi teaching theatre," but the traditional term is "academic."

Thank you, Rachel!
agree David Mossop PhD : I rather agree with Thomas that "academy" would be a better semantic translation but established usage seems to require the use of "academic".

academy theatre

Sorry to disagree with the Bolshoy Theatre, but "academic theatre" to me conjures up images of a large lecture hall. "Academy theatre" sounds like it is the theatre attached to an academy.

Perhaps an even better translation would be "Theatre of the _____ Academy", if the source material provides for such a translation.

Along similar lines, the Oscar is an award from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and it is called an "academy award", and not an "academic award", which sounds like the name of a scholarship.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Rachel Douglas : It's "academic" as a "teaching theatre", w an acad attached. Also "Academy" wd produce "State Academy" - and what Acad wd that be? The other word order wd come out: "Bolshoi State Theatre of the Bolshoi Academy" - but the relationship is other way around.
