If that's a theatre that has been calling itself "academic" for over 100 years, I don't think we should change that now even if would be better to say it otherwise. It's not for us to translate - it's something that exists in the theatre name and has been used for many years.

Sorry to disagree with the Bolshoy Theatre, but "academic theatre" to me conjures up images of a large lecture hall. "Academy theatre" sounds like it is the theatre attached to an academy.
Perhaps an even better translation would be "Theatre of the _____ Academy", if the source material provides for such a translation.

Along similar lines, the Oscar is an award from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and it is called an "academy award", and not an "academic award", which sounds like the name of a scholarship.
Perhaps an even better translation would be "Theatre of the _____ Academy", if the source material provides for such a translation.

: It's "academic" as a "teaching theatre", w an acad attached. Also "Academy" wd produce "State Academy" - and what Acad wd that be? The other word order wd come out: "Bolshoi State Theatre of the Bolshoi Academy" - but the relationship is other way around.
