George's answer may esily be interpreted as if separate rivets were used to attach the hilt to the blade, which is not the case - it's just the shank of the blade itself that has been peened ("расклепан").
I suggest the following heavily transformed translation of the entire sentence:
The button on top of the hilt is a splayed end of the blade shank fixing the hilt on the blade.

The whole sentence can be translated as
"At the top of the hilt, there is a button riveted outward [firmly] connecting the blade shank with the hilt"
I skip an explanation since Anton has already done a good job to visualize the connection
So, my suggested translation is similar in meaning to his, but is more literally close to the Russian original because
(1) there is
"на головке пуговка, соединяющая"
but no "end" of the blade shank is mentioned
(2) the roots in "riveted" and "connecting" are exactly equivalent to those in врасклеп and соединяющая, respectively, whereas "splay" and "fixing" are not
The example is from the patent linked to below, referring to Fig. 2c therein

: Небольшая поправка к Вашему рассуждению: корень rivet относится только к самому "гвоздику" заклепки, а обработка материала ударами (приводящая, в частности, к НАклепу, не имеющему отношения к заклепкам) - это peening. Кстати, чешское klepat = стучать.

Discussion
to rivet = to hammer in order to form into a head
(various dictionaries)
e.g. see
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/rivet
to splay = to make slanting or sloping ~ to bevel ~ скашивать, снимать фаску
http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Splay
to peen = to hammer, bend, or shape with a peen
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/peen
Peening = 1. The flattening or shaping with a peen hammer. 2. The stretching of metal by hammering or rolling the surface
http://www.motorera.com/dictionary/PE.HTM
peen (noun) = the working face of a hammer opposite the flat face, usually shaped for bending, shaping, or cutting the material being struck with the peen
http://www.contractorreferral.com/glossary/index.php?letter=...
see also Cross Peen, Ball Peen, or Straight Peen Hammers in the same Construction Glossary
Please note that only the verb 'to rivet' has the exact specific meaning of 'to form into a head' (i.e., into a rivet-like shape), whereas 'to peen' and 'to splay' don't
