Russian term

выведенными полукруглыми нишами

Russian to English Art/Literary Architecture
From a work on architectural monuments in Constantinople.

I have to admit I'm used to thinking of niches being выведенными. Protruding? Yet a niche is concave. Help!

Самой первой на этом месте появилась баня, построенная одновременно с акведуком Валенса. Ее остатки, с красиво выведенными полукруглыми нишами, хорошо видны и сейчас между акведуком и церковью

beautifully built / outlined / shaped niches

Perhaps in this case the author meant "выводить" in the artistic sense "to draw / depict / trace / shape / etc." (as in "выводить буквы / узоры / трели"), not in the litereal spatial sense "to protrude"? I mean, there is only one way for a niche to protrude, so there can't be a beautiful way and non-beautiful ways to do it - but lots of ways for the architect to shape a niche.

So "красиво выведенные ниши" would be something along the lines of beautifully built / outlined / shaped niches.

PS. Besides, I don't think one can even say, in Russian, that a "ниша выведена" in the sense "the niche is protruding". One would instead say that "ниша выдаётся" or something similar.
