The translation you should use depends quite simply on who the translation is intended for.
If it is for the USA - use "limited liability corporation" - as to my knowledge companies in the USA that are not private companies are generally referred to as 'corporations'.
If the translation is for the UK or the European market - I would use the English term "PLC" or to give it its complete name "public limited company".
Neither name implies that the company is quoted on a stock exchange.

Sociedade Anónima (or Anônima)
Everybody that said it was a limited liability company was correct. I just wanted to add that in Portugal we'd write "Anónima", whilst in Brazil it would be "Anônima".
