viri liberal
This is on a diploma (in Latin) from Lisbon, Portugal (1980s). The language is very "decorative" and I do not understand the "viri liberal" meaning here. Could someone enlighten me?
There are many unclear things such as the degree granted (it is a licentiate which is hard to translate so I am leaving it as licentiate) but the "viri liberal" stumped me.
Many thanks.

For 'liberalis' in the sense of 'gentlemanly, respectable, noble' cf., e.g., Cicero, Academica, 2.1.1: omnis liberalis et digna homine nobili doctrina, 'learning wholly gentlemanly and worthy of a noble man'.
