German term

Karikatur

German to English Other Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting
I am translating a doctoral diploma from German into English.

The subject of the dissertation was this:

(zahnmedizinische) KARIKATUR

"Dental CARICATURE" does not seem to make much sense.

But could "Karikatur" perhaps have something to do with "dental CARIES"??

Any suggestions??

Thank you!!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Dental CARICATURE

It sounds weird to me as well, however, I did some research about the definition of the German word "Karikatur" but none of the explanations showed a link to medicine. Is "(zahnmedizinische) Karikatur" the entire title?
I could not find the dissertation on Google Scholar...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Yes, that works. Thank you! REA / Chicago"

(dentistry) caricature/(cartoon)

Most likely a thesis in the scope of (dental) history of medicine.
In DE it ist not that uncommon that physicians earn their PhD in fields more or less adjacent to actual medical science...

Die Zahnmedizinische Karikatur

There is a series of books on Google Books called "Die Zahnmedizinische Karikatur" and they all seem to actually revolve around artistic caricatures of dentists. The first in the series (see first reference) contains an excerpt that names arists Auguste Raffet, Boilly, Cornillon, and Engelmann as producers of "zahnmedizinische Karikaturen." I don't know how well it fits the context of your source text, but apparently caricaturing dentists was a significant enough phenomenon in the past for five books to be written on its history (plus an article on one dentist's website—see second reference).
