Malaysia
arrested dozens of terrorist suspects in 2001, and
investigations, broadening across the region at
the end of the year, revealed the outline of a large
international terrorist network. The multinational
nature of the Jemaah Islamiah network illustrated
for most countries in East Asia the crucial need for effective regional counterterrorism mechanisms. In a move that bodes well for the region’s efforts, the ASEAN Regional Forum undertook an extensive counterterrorism agenda.
