Many thanks I was thinking of "latus" (gen. lateris) if that's correct.

Do you already have the word you wish to use for "side"? 'cause that makes a difference!

altera/alterum

IF you want to use "latus" it's latus alterum, but perhaps it might be a good idea to use "pars", since that's often used in geographic contexts, and then it's "altera pars", in nominative form. There are also other synonyms, in case you want to plunge further ...
