pinhole camera

A camera working without lens, also called stenopeic camera. In French this camera is called "sténopé" or "chambre sténopé". The characteristics of a pinhole camera is to produce slightly unsharp images with an infinite depth of field

If the image was being transmitted down "live" (via a pinhole camera mounted in the roof) onto a smooth reflective surface across which the onlooker might gaze this is usually referred to as a "Camera oscura" - there is one in Bristol where you can see the town spread out before you, bustling away like tiny ants. Fascinating.

Vermeer is reputed to have used one for various of his most realistic works.
