Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Mar 26, 2005:
That's fine Elena.,.Then is should be caps right?
The diploma of Medical Doctor is hereby conferred on Mr. John Smith..

Elena Sgarbo (X) Mar 26, 2005:
To Jane: Yes, I am citing my US diploma. It reads "medical doctor" (MD), and it corresponds to the letter to the diploma given by many medical schools in Argentina that still read -as yesteryear- "mdico cirujano", i.e., a non-surgeon physician....
Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) Mar 26, 2005:
Not one of the answer cites an actual diploma wording...I say what I am almost sure it is..but couldn't find one..that's what will tell you..if the person wants to use it in the US, I would use what is used here...

"physician and surgeon" (TN: equivalent to "medical doctor", MD)

Hola Esther,

I graduated in Argentina as an MD, then took the exams to have my degree validated here in the US.

While the title that many medical schools issue in Argentina is "médico cirujano", that is just a tradition; the real attributions of the professional are those of a general physician, or MD.

If a physcian wants to specialize in gral. surgery, they must train after receiving their MD degree -for several more years. At the end of that additional training, they receive the title of "general surgeon". (Surgical specialties, such as Orthopedics, GYN, etc, are included within the specialty training and don't need a separate title).

You may also take a look at a past KudoZ question, (see Juan Jacob's answer): http://www.proz.com/kudoz/781401.

What I usually do for translations like this is I provide the literal translation (i.e. "physician and surgeon") and then add a note clarifying the equivalence for the target country (i.e., "medical doctor / MD" for the USA).

Good luck,

Elena

\"Doctor of Medicine\", OTOH, is the translation for \"Doctor en Medicina\", un título otorgado a quienes han completado el doctorado (una carrera de 4 años que se inicia una vez obtenido el título de médico).

agree Jane Lamb-Ruiz (X) : Absolutely....one little thing..I would leave out the explanation and formalize to: Doctor of Medicine..even on a diploma? see the site i quoted..Doctor of Medicine (MD) ..versus Doctor of Philosophy of or in Medicine..

Thanks, Jane. Re: "Doctor of Medicine", however, it would be the translation for "Doctor en Medicina", which is roughly equivalent to an MD + PhD (i.e., it's more than "MD"/physician), at least here in the US. "Médico cirujano" is just "MD" :-)
agree Yvonne Becker : Gracias por la excelente explicación. Siempre que me he topado con este término (también aparece en títulos venezolanos y con la misma acepción que en Argentina), he tenido dudas sobre cómo traducirlo.
