Spanish term

intervención sexológica

Spanish to English Social Sciences Psychology
This is an article about sexual desire disorder in women with cancer. The title is "Efectividad de una intervención sexológica grupal para el tratamiento de los problemas de deseo sexual en mujeres afectadas de cáncer. Estudio experimental" The intervention involves sessions attended by the women participants and their partners if they wished. The topics at the sessions were, for example, "El hecho sexual humano" or "Cambios con el cáncer en la sexualidad".

I don't think "sexological intervention" is a common term in English. My research suggests that "sex therapy intervention" or ""psychosexual intervention" would be more appropriate. Any help greatly appreciated.

Discussion

peter jackson (asker) Feb 28:
Thanks to all for your help. My objection to sexological intervention, apart from sounding a little odd, was that I could find no mention of it in the bibliography of the article. I mangaged to contact my client, who said she was happy with "psychosexual intervention", and I have found some reliable sources that use it in relation to studies on women with cancer.

sexological interventions

Despite your misgivings, I googled "sexological interventions" and - among 1,160,000 results - found this:
"We use the term ”sexological interventions” as an overall term for psychological, psychosocial and educational interventions, within the context of information, counseling and treatment for sexual dysfunction."

Sometimes things look a bit odd until you become familiar with them after seeing them several times...

Then again, if you really don't like sexological, you might consider the more euphemistic "therapeutic interventions":
"A therapeutic intervention is a strategy that therapists, counselors and other behavioral health professionals can use to help clients that may be struggling to fully engage in their treatment"
Example sentence:

The most important aspect of any sexological intervention is the connection between the professional and the client

Note from asker:
Thanks for this, Neil. I only found 58 hits on Google Scholar and so was feeling doubtful.

neutral philgoddard : I think 'sexological interventions' sounds like translationese. I looked at your reference, and several other instances, and they were all translations. But 'therapeutic interventions', or even just 'therapy' is fine.

psychosexual group therapy + counselling

Agreeing with the asker's psychosexual angle, I have tried to incorporate the 'group' idea to neutralis/ze the controversial psycho-analysts' 'clinical /medical' sex therapy connotation that had earned a bad name for itself in 'my day' in the Swinging Sixties and into the 1970s.

These days the mantle has been taken over by medically unqualified psycho-therapists - amongst whom I count at least 4 of my female-only relatives and US-born PhD acquaintance in London - who may well be into such therapy' or 'counsel/l/ing'.
Example sentence:

Psychosexual therapy can help you work on specific sexual difficulties to resolve them and so improve sexual intimacy in your relationship.

Psychosexual therapy (or psychosexual counselling) is a specialised therapeutic technique
