French term

décharge

French to English Medical Medical (general)
Patient being treated following internal bleeding from ruptured external iliac artery. Patient has had transfusions, iliac artery stents inserted and is on antibiotics:

"Épisode de tachycardie ventriculaire mal tolérée avec dégradation hémodynamique et décharge plus frissons, réduite par CORDARONE en intraveineux plus supplémentation potassique plus supplémentation en sulfate de magnésium et remplissage."

I know "décharge" has been asked about before but I can't work out what it means in this context. The closest I could come was that the patient was laying down (off their feet as suggested here https://www.proz.com/kudoz/french-to-english/medical/550906-... but I'm not sure this is right.

Discussion

abe(L)solano Jan 17, 2023:
Voilá "qui retrouve une alteration importante de la FEVG"
Emily Gilby (asker) Jan 17, 2023:
Interesting what you say about ejection fraction, this is mentioned a bit further in the case report, occurring a couple of weeks after the "décharge": Réalisation de l'échographie cardiaque post TAVI qui retrouve une altération importante de la FEVG à 25 - 30%, déjà connue, avec une hypokinésie diffuse du ventricule gauche avec dyskinésie septale."
Sue Davis Jan 17, 2023:
I wonder if dégradation could apply to décharge also in which case I would agree with Abe's suggestiion of diminished ejection fraction.
abe(L)solano Jan 17, 2023:
Cordarone is used to normalize heart function, so I think it is a diminished ejection fraction, due to the context.
abe(L)solano Jan 17, 2023:
Thanks! yes, now I see it but no, I don't think that entry is helpful here.
See also "décharge" here:
https://fr-m.iliveok.com/health/diagnostic-de-linsuffisance-...
"...qui permet de déterminer la vitesse du flux sanguin, la pression dans les cavités cardiaques, la présence et le volume de la décharge sanguine pathologique."
Guess it's either blood loss or diminished ejection volume.
Emily Gilby (asker) Jan 17, 2023:
Sounds plausible, thank you. Let me try and put the link here and see if it works: https://www.proz.com/kudoz/french-to-english/medical/550906-...
abe(L)solano Jan 17, 2023:
I can't access the Kudoz reference you cite, but I think in this case "décharge" = perte du sang

French term (edited): décharge (ventriculaire)
Selected

diminished/altered (or problem in the) ventricular ejection

Given the context, reading the sentence and then the extra info on the report (alteration FEVG), it's very probable that they are taking about "décharge ventriculaire":

La décharge ventriculaire gauche avec une reperfusion retardée chez des patients avec un STEMI sans choc cardiogénique est-elle faisable, et « secure » pour les patients ?

I do believe now they mean "dégradation hemodynamique (ET DE LA) décharge...." (diminished ejection).

Bcs of course, the main problem was a ventricular tachycardia.

You're welcome. And I do believe it's the right term - 'unloading' being employed when a device is used to correct heart's dysfunction.
