Danish term

kampvalg

Danish to English Other Management
How would you translate "kampvalg" the context of an election of HSE representatives for various service groups in a company, please?

The sentence goes:

"Er der flere end én ansat, som stiller op for samme gruppe, skal der være kampvalg."

Thanks a lot in advance.

Thank you all for your time and an interesting discussion.
Lene Henriksen (asker) Jul 5, 2022:
Thank you so much, to both of you.
Diarmuid Kennan Jul 5, 2022:
election I agree, 'election' is adequate.
Christopher Schröder Jul 5, 2022:
Yes you are right Diarmuid, but we know already there is more than one candidate so it seems all the more redundant. On second thoughts Lene I prefer election as a broader term.
Lene Henriksen (asker) Jul 5, 2022:
Thank you very much for your suggestions, Diarmuid and Ice Scream.

Ice Scream: So would you simply use "ballot" or "vote" in this context? Thanks :-)
Diarmuid Kennan Jul 5, 2022:
Only one candidate Often in organizations like eg. universities, a formal election must take place according to their articles of association, even though there is only one candidate. Sometimes however, a second candidate is nominated and there is then a contested election.
Christopher Schröder Jul 5, 2022:
A ballot or a vote is what we’d actually say. Election is fine, but contested is a given and sounds odd.

disagree Michael Davies : Although 'contested election' is shown as the translation of 'kampvalg' in ordbogen.com, this is not correct. Kampvalg is just a normal election with more than one candidate. A 'contested election', however, has a contested result.

Hi Michael. You're right about a contested election having a contested result in a political context, but you're wrong about the meaning in the context of elections in an organisation. I will post some examples.
