Italian term

Emivelo

Italian to English Medical Medical (general)
Still working my way through a long medical report related to a brain MRI. The term 'emivelo' has come up a few times, have researched and cannot make out what it refers to... One sentence is 'Ipomobilita dell'emivelo di sinistra'. I think it is something located in the mouth?? Any help appreciated!

[left] velum

The soft palate, also known as velum, is a mobile fold of soft tissue attached to the posterior margin of the hard palate. It extends posteroinferiorly, being leveled with the border between the nasopharynx and oropharynx. Unlike the hard palate, the soft palate doesn't contain a bony framework.

For an MRI report I'd use "velum" rather than "soft palate"

neutral liz askew : sorry to be picky, but wouldn't this imply there are more than one velum, i.e. right and left velum, whereas there is only one soft palate. Just a thought.

That's ok, translators *have to* be picky"!). Yours is definitely more precise. But I often see that the Italian "emi-organ/cavity + side" is often rendered as "side + organ/cavity" (eg left abdomen, right diaphragm), when divided by the midline.
