Spanish term

se protocoliza

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
The phrase occurs in a deceased patient's Resumen Clinico. It goes: "... por lo que se protocoliza para histerectomia total abdominal." Nothing in RAE fits in this context, it sounds like it might be doctor's speak for 'approved/scheduled'??

Discussion

Chris Bruton (asker) Apr 19, 2022:
I tend to agree with 'schedule' in this context, as the other suggestions--'follow the standard of care protocol'/'should be practiced'--do not account for the fact this is a passive use of the verb with 'patient' understood to be the subject. Or I am missing something?
abe(L)solano Apr 19, 2022:
I agree with Joseph. Here it means she was scheduled for the standard surgical procedure. But I think it's not uncommon to hear this in LatAm hospitals.
Joseph Tein Apr 18, 2022:
schedule It seems to me, also, that "schedule" is what is meant here. The patient was scheduled to undergo a total hysterectomy.

This expression is not common, but I found around 100 of these usages online in a medical context ... for example:

Diagnóstico diferencial: Carcinoma metaplásico vs. Osteosarcoma vs. Neoplasia mixta mesenquimal. Se protocoliza para intervención quirúrgica, realizándose:
Mastectomía radical derecha tipo Madden, ... etc.

should be practiced

…total abdominal hysterectomy should be practiced…
Protocolizar refers to the term protocolo which means a detailed set of rules for scientific, technical or medical performance. (Rae.es) https://dle.rae.es/protocolo
I believe that the word practice can fit the meaning because, in English, it refers to the work of a health professional. https://www.ldoceonline.com/es-LA/dictionary/practise

I hope it can help.
