Onus probandi or the onus of proof, though used interchangeably in English law dictionaries and criminal law textbooks with the burden of proof, is not recommended as they are not the same thing. Even online definitions get the distinction wrong:

In civil law cases, the burden of proof requires the plaintiff to convince the trier of fact (whether judge or jury) of the plaintiff's entitlement to the relief sought.

The source text is a paraphrase of Article 373 (I) of the Brazilian Civil Procedure Code, which concerns the allocation of the burden of proof between the claimant and the defendant.
The initial part of the text of Article 373 is:

II - ao réu, quanto à existência de fato impeditivo, modificativo ou extintivo do direito do autor.
In order to successfully assert its claim, the claimant must therefore prove the existence of the right on which its claim is based.
For example, in a claim to recover a debt, the claimant must plead and prove the legal basis of the debt, i.e. the existence of the contract, the amount of the debt and that payment is due.
O ônus da prova, no Novo CPC, pode ser atribuído tanto ao autor quanto ao réu da ação. No caso do primeiro, caberá a ele comprovar suas alegações quanto a fato constitutivo de direito. Já no caso do segundo, caberá a ele comprovar fato impeditivo, modificativo ou extintivo do direito do autor.
