Hello! I'm translating the following news article about the "180-degree turn" that the Argentine Government (under Alberto Fernandez) made with regards to its relations with Venezuela:

But I'm having trouble understanding the phrase "esa avenida de la “grieta”."

Here's the context:

"Alberto Fernández estuvo el viernes último en un diálogo virtual con el ex presidente Lula da Silva. Lo organizaron las mismas figuras de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales que lograron cancelar una charla del juez Sergio Moro, quien había enviado a la cárcel a Lula. **********En esa avenida de la “grieta”********** Alberto F. dijo sentir que gobernaba hoy en un continente con un único aliado, en México, por López Obrador. Dijo que se extrañaban los gobiernos de Néstor Kirchner, de Lula, de Hugo Chávez, de Evo Morales, de Rafael Correa, de Tabaré Vazquez, Pepe Mujica y Michelle Bachelet, entre otros."

I've been living this particular grieta here in Argentina for the past fifteen years or so! It's the creation of Nestor and Cristina Kirchner, who specialised during their government in demonising everybody who disagreed with them, trying to close down newpapers, creating media favourable to them, giving salary increases to their supporters, etc. They also declared their support for Chavez, Castro, etc., while stealing billions of dollars through rampant corruption. This resulted in half the country being fanatical supporters and the other half being furious opponents. This division was named by a famous journalist, Jorge Lanata, as "la grieta".
This has now been renewed by the recent election which brought Cristina back to power as vice-president. And Alberto Fernandez is continuing on the same "avenida de la grieta", again declaring his sympathy for Chavez, etc., because he can't survive as president without Cristina's suppport.

En esa venida de la grieta Alberto Fernandez is being faced with this social divide, both from an economic perspective from all segments of the population since the poor receive subsidies from the government, the rich don't need them and those in the middle can't work and receive nothing, so are flat broke and there is a lot of division with respect due the quarantine imposed to control the pandemic, as well as political division between different segments because of censure-ship about political decisions being made. So with all of the as context, I agree it is a confrontational situation. I would think along the lines of this "confrontation situation of social divisio".

Chema and Mary are both right about the use of "grieta" to describe the divide that exists in Argentine society. I think the "avenida" refers directly to the forum at which AF was speaking, and is a sarcastic reference by the journalist to the "avenida del medio" or middle way proposed by certain moderate politicians in an effort to bridge the divide, which certainly does not describe AF's comments.

The choice of meanings is between avenue and outburst (of speech for instance) while the second part of the clause is either a breach, break, fissure or crack. A breach is a broken promise or betrayal.

I understand that those who abstain from voting remain neutral without supporting the stance of one group over another.

They cancelled a chat with the judge who had sent someone to prison. In that spate (sudden outburst) of betrayal (broken promise) he claimed to aplogise that nowadays we're governed in a continent with only one ally, lacking in other governments.

(increasingly) polarised political landscape?

There seems to be a lot about 'la grieta' in current Argentine politics. For example: the below article describes the current split within the population, and the narrowing/shrinking of the 'middle ground'.
