propensity score

COVID-19 GBK English to French Medical Medical (general)
Rosenbaum and Rubin proposed the use of propensity scores as a method for allowing for confounding by indication. Propensity may be defined as an individual's probability of being treated with the intervention of interest given the complete set of all information about that individual. The propensity score provides a single metric that summarises all the information from explanatory variables such as disease severity and comorbity; it estimates the probability of a subject receiving the intervention of interest given his or her clinical status.
Example sentences:
Compared with a propensity score-matched cohort of 1090 cancer-free individuals with COVID-19 from the same health system, the participants with cancer and COVID-19 had higher case fatality rates across all age cohorts, with the between-group differences reaching statistical significance among patients aged 45–64 years and those older than 75 years (odds ratio [OR]=4.35 and 2.83, respectively). (MedWire News)
After inverse probability of treatment weighting was applied, 15 of the 19 covariates in the planned propensity score had weighted standardised differences below 10%; four covariates (confusion on admission, chronic kidney disease, chronic heart failure (New York Heart Association class III or IV), and liver cirrhosis (Child-Pugh class B or more)) exceeded the threshold (supplementary data 3). (The BMJ)
Neil Mehta, M.B.B.S., from the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, and colleagues examined the association between use of ACEIs/ARBs and the likelihood of testing positive for COVID-19 in a retrospective cohort study with overlap propensity score weighting.
