Change log

Jul 8, 2019 21:56: Rachel Fell changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): mchd, Tony M, Rachel Fell

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Agree with Tony of course. I'd just mention that you'll find escalier/bâtiment unique in official docs about properties (title deeds drafted by solicitors, auction sales, etc.), bearing in mind this is a lease agreement. I've kept a copy of the deed of the first flat I bought in Paris. Its description includes bâtiment unique, escalier unique but it was nothing to write home about and there was nothing posh about the area. I think it has to do with locating the property as precisely as possible in terms of ownership and/or perhaps for tax reasons - these tax people know exactly where we live and what it's worth :-) Mentioning escalier unique even when there's no other staircase is perhaps due to the fact that it has to be included formally for the doc to be valid.

single staircase

They seem to be emphasizing that this is a single, select apartment block with just one staircase.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I'm not sure how I'd translate "bâtiment unique". I assume it means the only building on the site, which is not something we'd really say in English, and you could leave it out. //Good point. In that case, don't leave it out.

Thanks, Phil! As you say, probably 'single block' — as distinct from those larger developments that say 'Block G, staircase 3' etc. — with some kind of implication of 'downmarket'!
agree Daryo : you would expect a nice building in Boulevard Suchet, but still a "uniquely designed" staircase makes no sense. It's simply about saying "the only one staircase".

One-of-a-kind staircase

Unique is only one without one like it and the closest term which is very common is one-of-a-kind.

Take a look at the link I sent you. Wish you good luck.

neutral Tony M : Seems extraordinarily unlikely, from the way it is being used in the text as given. Context and relevance are all-important here.

neutral writeaway : 100% confidence backed by 000 refs? /hearing what? unique has many meanings and this one is far-fetched in the context

My confidence is based on 30 years of hearing it.
disagree Daryo : your link proves NOTHING - it only illustrates the meaning you presumed // far more likely meaning: there is "only one" of it - only one building on the property, only one staircase in the building, etc ...

disagree B D Finch : "Unique is only one without one like it": not in French!
