German term

ehemännliche Ermächtigung

German to English Social Sciences History 1872 power of attorney

This is a power of attorney, and the only definition I can find for "ehemännliche Ermächtigung" seems to be the rights of the husband in marriage, which I don't think makes sense here as they are authorizing a friend to act as their representative when they emigrate to America (1872). Any ideas?

In other news... ...I think I'd agree with Sonja here about "eheweiblich." This may be of help, considering I said this all seems to be rooted in French law:

Don't mind me, I've revised my entries to cut them down to one post:

Before you're going to be confused entirely, please see here for the difference between a letter of authorization and a power of attorney:
http://info.legalzoom.com/differences-between-power-attorney...

Don't agree with Emal's explanation. There's also a limited power of attorney:
http://info.legalzoom.com/definition-limited-power-attorney-...

You'll find both, only separated by a slash:

Also: special power of attorney

Please note the difference between an attorney-in-fact and an attorney-at-law. Cf

In your case, this seems much more complicated than a simple letter of authorization.

I get the feeling that two issues are being conflated here and it has little to do with acting as the representative for a friend. May be as simple as "with the husband's consent": https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/Vict/44-45/21/enacted?v...
Sonja Marks-Terrey Feb 12, 2018:
eheweiblich yes, "belonging to the wife". sorry for the late response.
Kaportnoy (asker) Feb 9, 2018:
The term "eheweiblich" also just appeared: Von den verkauften Grundstücken ist die Hofraithe des Grundstücks No. 751 eheweiblich Gut nach Grundbuch Band VIII No. 169 Seite 318. But I don't think this would mean the wife's approval? More belonging to the wife?
Kaportnoy (asker) Feb 8, 2018:
Oh that makes perfect sense and seems so obvious now! Thank you so much!
Sonja Marks-Terrey Feb 8, 2018:
I think that she, Maria Anna, is acting with her husband's authority. Is there a standard legal term for that?

husband's authorization

"authorization letter" is a common term for Vollmacht (which is often mistranslated as "power of attorney").
"Ermächtigung" seems to be a dated term for what today is known as "Vollmacht".
Example sentence:

"Both are of legal age. The wife is acting with the husband's authorization."

Note from asker:
Oh so it would be an authorization letter, and not a power of attorney? I am not very familiar with what an actual power of attorney means, but when I looked it up it seemed to fit "the authority to act for another person in specified or all legal or financial matters."
