: i have to disagree - the spelling according to international sources is Domanik - this name was given to the formation by the Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Murchison when he worked in the Urals; the rock formation consists of black bituminous shales etc

the 2 vol. Russian Geologicheskii Slovar' (Izd. Nedra, Moscow, 1973 gives long, entirely different definitions of svita (suite) and formatsiya (formation), close to ours. In any event, it's Domanik deposits (otlozheniya) here. Google it and also "Images for Domanik Suite formation."I think translators/others hesitate to use "suite" because of its nongeological meanings.

Congillen, at age 85 and 65 years as a R>E translator regulary,daily of 70 different scientific/technical journals (finally retired in past August!), I've found that at least 75% of words now used didn't exist at the start. In Geology, the Moscow, 1960 Stratigraphic Classification and Terminology, R>E, devoted 3 pages to "suite," prec eded by "seriya" ("serIes") and followed by "pachka" ("packet")," and also "gorizont" (horizon"); then of free use: "kompleks" ("complex",) "tolshcha" ("group of strata"),
again "gorizont" (without its own geographical name), "sloi" (beds without its own geo. name); "pachka" (without numerical and alphabetical indication) and "plast" (stratum in stratigraphy) Special stratigraphic and temporal terminology is used for ingneous and Precambrian formations. I don't agree with some of the English geological translations of stratigraphic/lithostraigraphic terms therein. Language lives, evolves, but geological terms used for ages are set--should a rock be called a rockstar? LOL. Excuse misspellings: at 85 I'm happy to see the keyboard, remember the alphabet, that one axon can find a dendrite for intercourse--oops, synapse.

Yes, excuse misspellings. See 1280 page Stratigraphic Dictionary of the USSR, Moscow, 1956, wherein is Domanik Suite, suite being a collection of rock specimens from a single area, or of a single kind, or a succession of associated sedimentary strata.

Have you consulted the 2010-2012 version of the Russian Geological Dictionary (3 volumes, VSEGEI, St Petersburg - and it is online, by the way), and the other 3-volume work, the Russian Encyclopaedia of Geology (2010-2012also VSEGEI, but not online unfortunately)? - there is a lot of discussion about svita/suite and formatsiya/formation. And I agree, there is a lot of confusion in English and Russian about suite (a suite of rocks) and formation, since they can be used in formal and informal senses. Both words were borrowed by Russian, but can be used in quite the opposite sense from their original meanings. Language is like that, i guess ?

Agreed; but in the case here, the Domanik Formation is made of sedimentary rocks; in English we do use suite for igneous rocks; and agree with your other point, Member is the unit below Formation in the hierarchy; yes, the Int. Guide is reliable
