The definition of jogging or inching as described by NEMA is "the quickly repeated closure of a circuit to start a motor from rest for the purpose of accomplishing small movements of the driven machine." The term jogging actually means to start a motor with short jabs of power at full voltage.

In some applications, such as motion control, machine tooling, and material handling, one must be able to turn the motor on for a few seconds to move the load slightly in the forward or reverse direction. This type of motor control is called jogging. The jogging circuit utilizes a reverse motor starter to allow the motor to be moved slightly when the forward or reverse push button is depressed.

Hvis JOG kontakten er sluttet, når kontakten for rotationsretning bliver aktiveret, er rampen 0,1 s uanset indstillingerne ACC, dEC, AC2 og dE2. Hvis kontakten for rotationsretning er sluttet, når JOG kontakten bliver aktiveret, benyttes de konfigurerede ramper.
Den kortest mulige tid mellem to JOG operationer er 0,5 sekund.
