French term
C’est ce débat que nous examinons
"This article examines that debate." is what I currently have. Any other suggestions very welcome.
TIA.

May 1, 2014 18:36: John Marston changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"
Non-PRO (3): philgoddard, Carol Gullidge, John Marston
When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

I would *start* the abstract with "The following article [or "paper"] examines the debate between..."
With abstracts in EN, the tendency is to let readers know directly and early on what the paper is going to be about.
Thanks - that's just the sort of thing I'd miss at this stage! |

It is this question that we will examine
You can use "debate," but it sounds to me more like the question of which theory is true which is going to be examined, in the course of which the "debate" over why one is superior to the other will be discussed.
Thanks Christopher. A definite improvement on what I had! |
It is the question/debate/matter we're looking into
Thanks re_ibr. Yes, that'd work in a slightly lower register. |
Discussion
... But I don't really see the problem here - just try a few variations and see which sounds the most punchy!
