Extra/longer hours, overtime
I suppose övertid (overtime) is the number of hours worked over and above the statutory requirement, involving additional (overtime) payment; whereas, extra/longer hours are hours of work one puts in by choice or option without extra payment.

Thank you Sampat. Many thanks to you Sven. Very helpful link. |

additional time, overtime
mertid
A part time employee working extra hours that fall below (or up to a miximum of) the total hours for a fulltime employee - eg if a part time employee usually works 25 hours a week occasionally works 35 hours a week, the extra 10 hours is paid as "mertid"
övertid
Any work time exceeding fulltime hours
se Arbetsmiljöverket
Med mertid förstås sådan arbetstid som vid deltidsanställning överstiger arbetstagarens ordinarie arbetstid och jourtid enligt anställningsavtalet.

just to be clear, both övertid and mertid are usually paid, but probably at different rates (penalty rates apply for overtime). Excepions: Some employment contracts may stipulate that (some or all) overtime is not paid or that it can be taken out as time in lieu.

: That's it. And time in lieu is payment of sorts, isn't it, as you get paid even when you are not at work.
