Portuguese to English Law/Patents History History of ceramic tiling
This is taken from an exhibition on "azulejos" and can be seen in the following sentence:

"Destino semelhante teve a sua congénere em Espanha, instalada no edifício da cartuxa de Sevilha, convento desamortizado que foi adquirido em 1841 pelo britânico Charles Pickman, marquês de Pickman desde 1873."

The original company referred to (the counterpart to the Spanish company referred to above) is a Portuguese china factory that went bankrupt in 1994.

I can find very few instances of this in dictionaries or translation websites so any help would be most appreciated.

This is the official word usually used to describe this process of confiscating and selling off ecclesiastical properties and lands that occurred in Portugal (and Spain). Because of the specific laws under which this took place, the Portuguese word is kept in many books and an explanation given in brackets. Known as the "Desamortización de Mendizábal".

The Mercado del Arenal, located in Calle Pastor and Landero, was completed in 1947 by the architect Juan Talavera Heredia. He took advantage of the enormous lot that was occupying the disentailed Convent of Nuestra Señora and then Pópulo prison.
