Hello everyone.
I am proofreading the translation of a Peruvian contract. There is a "Definition of Terms" section which begins with the following paragraph:
"1. DEFINICIÓN DE TÉRMINOS
A menos que en el texto del presente documento se estipule de otra manera las palabras y expresiones genéricas que se señalan a continuación tendrán los siguientes significados y en cualquier caso de interpretación los ***títulos y complementarios*** deberán ser ignorados."
There follows a list of terms, numbered 1.1, 1.2 and so on, with the term in bold as a heading and a definition underneath. There are also subheadings; for example 1.5 ACTAS has 1.5.1 ACTAS DE ACEPTACIÓN TÉCNICA, 1.5.2 ACTA DE AFORO Y RECEPCIÓN, and so on.
I don't understand what "títulos y complementarios" means, particularly "complementarios". I imagine "títulos" may mean "headings", and I wonder whether "complementarios" means subheadings. But I don't really understand the last part at all; what must be ignored for the purposes of interpretation, and why?
The phrase occurs in a similar way in several other Peruvian contracts on the Internet, but I haven't managed to deduce the meaning from them.
I'd be very grateful for any ideas. UK English, if that makes any difference.
