Spanish term

desarollo medio

Spanish to English Science Forestry / Wood / Timber Describing forests, trees
Hi,

I am translating a text on the environmental impact of wind farms on bat populations.

When describing roositing habitats, there are three terms:

"pinar joven", "pinar maduro" y "de desarollo medio".

I have used "young pine groves", "mature pine groves" and "XXX"

Can anyopne help with the last one. I have thought of "average growth" but I think I am barking up the wrong tree (if you'll excuse the pun).

Regards

Lafayette Eaton Sep 22, 2012:
Forestry terms Forestry terms are often somewhat different from ecological terms; the best word may depend on who will read the report. If these are plantations, mid-rotation would be best. If they are native pine forests, medium-sized might be more descriptive. Note that foresters tend to refer to old growth (primary) forests as "overmature", since they could have been harvested earlier.

Thank you for the proposals, due to the nature of the text I will be using both early successional and mid-rotation. Although mid-rotation does seem to fit "desarollo medio" quite nicely. Thanks

How about medium-growth?

mid-rotation

I have found a text where they refer to young pine plantations/stands (under ten years), mid rotation (10-30) and late rotation (over 30 years). Could this be useful?

early successional (pine grove) habitat

Declined
Here I've a book that specialises in forestry management and talks of young, early successional habitat and mature forest....HTH

"There are many questions about “why, what, where, and how” to manage for ***early successional habitats***. Tradeoffs among ecological services such as carbon storage, hydrologic processes, forest products, and biotic diversity between ******young, early successional habitats and mature forest are not fully understood********. Personal values and attitudes regarding forest management for conservation purposes versus "letting nature take its course," complicate finding common ground on whether and how to create or sustain early successional habitats. In this book, expert scientists and experienced land managers synthesize knowledge and original scientific work to address critical questions sparked by the decline of early successional habitats.
