Spanish term

conocimiento ajeno

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law (general)
From an academic text looking at the fundamental right to informational self-determination, this comes in a section referring to Article 18 of the Spanish constituion and its guarantee of personal intimacy

Excluir del conocimiento ajeno parcelas de nuestra vida se ha convertido en una forma de ser libres; el bien jurídico que representa esa necesidad básica, esa aspiración, es lo que llamamos intimidad

I dont really understand the notion of "external knowledge" here

Discussion

Benjamin A Flores Dec 24, 2011:
the sum of the parts I believe the best translation for the whole phrase is the one provided by Andy, but what I wonder is if the Asker wants the whole thing translated or just the two words he is posting. ??? These Kudoz is creating a Glossary to be of future use we need to keep it straightforward.
philgoddard Dec 23, 2011:
I hope you're not translating "intimidad" as "intimacy". It means privacy.
Sheilann Dec 23, 2011:
I think i missed most of it. Sorry! ---
William Pairman (asker) Dec 23, 2011:
Not sure how that works Sheilann... "Excluding sections of our lives from hearsay has become a way of being free"

I must be missing something, sorry

Keeping certain aspects of our life private has become...

...

I don't really see the need for anything literal here.

Of course, you can replace "keeping·, "aspects", "private" etc...with other terms, but this is the meaning.

Creo que los traductores hacemos exactamente eso.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Andy's answer reads extremely well but I'd also like to see Benjamin's in the glossary - shame I can't split the points. Many thanks everybody"

hearsay

Kowledge one hears from people other than the person concerned
Peer comment(s):

disagree AllegroTrans : this has nothing to do with hearsay, it is about privacy

others' knowledge

I believe this refers to privacy -- keeping some things in your life private, without others knowing about that.
