Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature

Hi there

This is taken from a poem about domestic violence from Costa Rica.
I'm having trouble with the word "paleada" here. I know that it is in reference to garroteada and more or less refers to the "golpes" but cannot think of a suitable English word.

Pero vino el tiempo esperaba gemelos
El me dio una garroteada y me tendió en el suelo.
Llegó una cuñada llorando me dijo:
Que Beto más ingrato ya mató a tus hijos.
A los dos dias ellos nacieron, de la paleada

Any help would be appreciated.
