In this context it's even better to use
בתגובה לאתגר שלי
This would flow best.
The challenge is clear: The speaker refuses to eat the food until the other person proves that there's more.
That's the challenge - "until you show me more"
So:

הוא הרים את קולו בתגובה לאתגר שלי - "לא צריך, לא צריך, זה בחדר הזה".

I made my entry before I saw the context - the English here is very poor and while להרים את הכפפה is generally apt for the source expression, its not relevant in this context - instead try הוא הרים את קולו בנסיון להתאמת איתי

הוא לא מראה לדמות הראשונה עוד אוכל.
מצד שני הוא כן מגיב לאתגר, בכך שהוא מרים את קולו.
The narrator/first speaker refused to eat the food until shown by the other person that it's not the last remaining food they have.
This WAS the challenge - "until you show me more"
In this context the challenge here is neither מבחן nor ציפיות
If you want to move it away from the source
you could use "demand" דרישה or תביעה in this context,
but what's wrong with the simple and litteral אתגר?
[תבעתי ממנו להוכיח שיש לו עוד אוכל]
...
