Plaque = Sarro
Tarter = Tártaro/Sarro
In English, the difference may be one of permanence, with plaque appearing (comprised of a film-like bacteria) to be the more easily removed of the two. The definitions in Spanish (del DRAE) suggest that \"sarro\" and \"tártaro\" are synonyms. Regardless of the distinctions that may or may not exist (in Spanish) between the two terms, there is little support that the word \"placa\" is widely used (outside of the US). In the Dominican Republic, \"sarro\" is quite common. :-)

Al fin y al cabo, parece que la place bacteriana existe. But we're grandecitos ya; we can own up being wrong every now and then. :-)

Right about now, Jessica, the point may be moot, though I still can't help but wonder how many people might refer to plaque with the word "sarro"? Though not always the case, most people may actually agree with DRAE here. :-)

It would be interesting to know if these terms are used in dental schools throughout the Spanish-speaking world. In any event, you've provided us with a good source, and I'm glad you've found it. To translate, is to learn. :-)
