Hey all,

My firm uses Wordfast Pro, and it's easy enough to check the work of the in-house translators before they clean the document, but we've started also using freelancers, who turn in an already cleaned and fully formatted translation, which is nice but makes omission checks etc. take more time, because I can no longer view the source text segments alongside their translated counterparts. Any solution? Am I going to end up needing something like XTM Workbench?

As the simplest tool, I usually use translation alignment tools e.g. WinAlign, WordFast Classic Plus, or MS Word pair by side.

Let them deliver bilingual files Aug 5, 2015

When I work for an agency which uses WFP (I know of 1), I deliver the bilingual file. But the translators must view the translation in Word and check the output themselves and apply the corrections because the spelling checking in WFP is not very good. It is much easier to check spelling in Studio.

Yes, well, it depends on how much money there is in the project. If you can afford it, separate the proofreading and QM into two distinct rounds, i.e. let the translator deliver a bilingual file, then do proofreading on that file, and then generate the target file, and then let a translator (or the original translator) re-check the final file for any errors (and if there are errors that affect the bilingual file, let that translator also update the bilingual file).

The alternative is to do alignment, but since two documents will have different formatting tags for identical formatting, you'd have to either do the alignment on format-less versions of the file (and do another quick formatting check on the final file) or do the alignment on formatted versions, but then remove all formatting tags before adding the final version to the TM (otherwise your TM will contain mismatching formatting tags).
