Last Friday I received the sad news from Herman's family that he has passed away on Tuesday last week after several operations.
He has been a good friend and colleague to me and will be sadly missed.
"Don't mourn when I am dead
I am not really dead, you know
it is my body that's lying there
I will only be dead, once you've forgotten me."

I remember the good talks with Herman at different Powwows. He was not only a great colleague, but also a good friend. It's a shame that he is no longer among us. | | |

Herman had worked for some time in Düsseldorf many years back and it was at one of Klaus Herrmann's Powwows there that I first met him. We had both worked in marketing as 'foreigners in Germany' and consequently had a lot to tales to exchange.
He also went on to attend Powwows in Berlin. In fact I believe that he attended quite a few Powwows/conferences (e.g. Cracow) and was probably pretty well-known across the community.
A straight-talking and charming guy with a pleasant droll sense of humour who people were always pleased to see, be it 'virtually' or in person.
I shall certainly miss our chats and am deeply saddened to see a good man called before his time.
My deepest sympathies to his family.

My experience is basically the same as Chris's - I first met Herman in Düsseldorf some years ago and thoroughly enjoyed our conversations ever since.
We'll miss you and your unmatched sense of humour!

I had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with him in Krakow, and again experienced the pleasure of his company at the conference in Edinburgh.
I am sure he will be sadly missed among the translator community.

I think Herman enjoyed the benefits of combining the virtual and the real translators world. I've met him at several venues. I thankfully used his hospitality by staying the night at his home when there was a powwow around his home place and he stayed the night at my home. Over a beer or by phone we discussed many a thing like CATs, grammar problems, photography ... you name it. The translators world really was important to him and in every aspect he was willing to go the extra mile.
