I just came across this post while I was having a fit of homesickness and complaining about it to my wife. The funny thing is the place that I feel homesick about isn't my actual hometown. I was born and bred in Istanbul, spending 39 years there, but I never truly liked it. Five years ago, we moved to Adana, a city infamous for its perceived criminality (which is untrue) and oppressively humid summers (which is sadly accurate), yet also celebrated for its culinary culture—the aspect I miss the most. However, after the earthquake, we moved to Ankara this year, and I'm still struggling to come to terms with the fact that I'm no longer in Adana. We are seriously considering to move back. The restaurants here are subpar, and I suspect they learn how to cook by watching YouTube videos. What's the point of working hard all day if I can't enjoy good food?
I think the best place to live depends heavily on the expectations of an individual. I find these lists to be funny as they disregard what one is to expect living there and their priorities. ▲ Collapse

This ranking is silly. I strongly disagree with Sharia law. There's no way I'd put Malaysia in the top five.
All countries have at least one thing that really ticks me off, anyway. No matter where I live, I won't be content with the situation. Maybe it's about time I program my own virtual world and transfer my consciousness into a digital form, so I could live there. I envy video game characters sometimes.

This ranking is probably based on expat mentality: the desire to live outside one's country of origin, yet never become fully integrated in the destination country. Sort of an international version of living in a gated community.

I've always hated the expression, with its implication of someone well-heeled dipping their toe into the water 'out foreign'. For sure, the migrants driven from their homes by war, hunger or climate are not considered expats.
As for places, it's hard to rate whole countries. I love the town I live in, 15,000 inhabitants and an hour or so from Milan. I would never consider living anywhere else. But I don't really now what 'Italy' is or how to rate it. Like Metin suggests in his comme... There are probably a million places I'd be happy living in if all you take into consideration are the cost of living, how welcoming the locals are, and stuff like that. However, I choose to live where my children can visit me easily: I'm just an hour from where my daughter lives and just four hours from where my son lives (and he's looking to move back closer to home). The most welcoming city on earth would have to also welcome both my kids for me to want to live there, and since they are both w...
