English to Spanish: Introduction of "Beyond the Broomstick" General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Religion
Source text - English The 20th century has seen many changes, in both a technological and a social sense. Things which we now take for granted didn’t even exist in 1900, and for this reason it is hard to imagine life without certain material comforts.
One of the biggest social changes is the introduction of the Social Welfare State. The influence of such a system of social security stretches far; we do not need to worry about getting old, being ill, or illiteracy, or poverty. If you think about it, we should be living in Utopia. Isn’t that so? Most people will answer ‘no.’ Why?
What more do we want? We are flooded with information via the mass media, there are un-countable social workers busy solving our problems. The information age has redeemed us from drudgery: why should we still be unsatisfied then? Is it because we feel powerless against the State, because we feel like a number in a computer memory? Or has it something to do with our spiritual situation – not so much religion, but our spiritual well being?
The system of social care has lightened our daily burden but has it given us a deeper meaning to life? In other words has the quality life improved - not quantity but quality? Of course we should not underestimate the importance of our mundane lives, yet neither should we neglect the spiritual side; both go hand in hand. But spirituality and religion are not the same - one does not have to follow a particular faith to be spiritually active and aware. In fact, some people will argue that when religion becomes too dogmatic the higher spiritual aspirations are lost, rather than enriched.
Others find that some religious movements give them exactly the support that they need for their spiritual development. As in all things, what is right for one is not necessarily right for another. We should not forget this important point when discussing such topics.
It not unusual for someone to suddenly realise their spiritual situation in life is far from their ideal. Then begins a period of seeking, to try and find something that is closer to their vision of this ideal. Often they are not even sure what it is they are looking for, but they know something is missing and there is an urge to seek something ‘higher.’ Once this urge becomes apparent they become a ‘seeker.’
Such a period of seeking is often not without problems. In the last 20 years we have seen hundreds of alternative groups and sects emerging, as it were, out of nothing.
