As far as I know, you need to pay for them. These folks are in business, just like we are.
I have been using WF for about 5 years and, believe me, it is well worth the investment.

Wordfast offers you a completely free-forever version with all functions; the only limitation is that you can only collect 500 segments in the TM. This is rather a generous limit, and works well for people who have smaller projects, and choose to create a new TM for each job/project, instead of having a "big mama" TM.
Take a look at the "Cat Tools" option under Tools in the menu line above, and you will find out about various other tools that are available, including cost and condtions.

you can download version 3.35 and register it for free to remove the limit of 500 units. This is a full software and fully functional but in an old version.
SDLX has a free version called SDL lite that allows you to work on projects prepared with the full version but not to prepare pdf or word files on your own.

Look up across + translation in Google to find a tool called across. It's a CAT tool and, if you register with the site, you will get a free activation key within approximately 10 days.
It's free for use without limitations!

Wordfast also offers a FREE browser-based TM tool known as Wordfast Anywhere. To try Wordfast Anywhere, you can go to http://www.freetm.com and create a login. Once you login, you can upload your documents as well as your TMs and glossaries to a private workspace and begin translating. Your TMs and glossaries grow as you translate and remain completely confidential (your private workspace cannot be accessed by anyone). You can also leverage translations from a large public, read-only TM (the VLTM), and/or from machine translation when there are no matches in your private TM.

I've been trying WordFast Anywhere for about 2 weeks now and it works reasonably well, but there are a few very important limitations (e.g. you don't seem to be able to export your TM) and there are quite a few bugs.
They provide fairly good support though and the service is new, so I guess we'll have to allow them some leeway to sort those issues out.

You actually can export your TMs from WFA. Go to File > TMs and Glossaries. In the General Tab, choose 'Use My TMs and Glossaries' and click on 'setup.' In the dialog box that appears, select the TM you wish to export and click 'Download'. You will be prompted to choose whether you wish to download the TM in TMX or Wordfast TM format. Select your format and click 'OK'. Then you have the option to either download the TM directly, receive the TM via email, or create a zip file available by a file URL.
